VIENNA URBION

URBION, developed by architect Silja Tillner in collaboration with the Viennese municipal authorities, became one of the five guiding projects of "URBAN-Wien". The task was to upgrade the central zone of the Gürtel (city ring-road), both aesthetically and functionally, by means of local architectural and socio-ecological interventions. In addition to carrying out the necessary renovation work, URBION also aimed at developing a new image for the Gürtel that would help to socially stabilise the core of this urban area in the long-term. To achieve this goal URBION combined urban planning and architectural measures such as, for example, the redesign of the transport junction at Urban-Loritz-Platz, restoring the original transparency of the railway viaduct arches by giving them glass facades, and creating an attractive, youthful and quality infrastructure in the clubs, bars and restaurants under the elevated U-6 metro line.
