‘Volkert macht blau’ is a beacon project in public space rejuvenation that is being implemented in the neighbourhood 20+2 on Volkertplatz as part of WieNeu+. Measures are being discussed and selectively implemented together with the square's users. These are intended to make Volkertplatz and Volkertmarkt more climate-resilient and usable.

    The focus is on
    1. holistic water management.
    2. measures for climate change adaptation and climate protection.
    3. increasing usability for all.

The removal of heat islands and greening will contribute to a neighbourhood worth living in. The spatial needs of residents and tradespeople will also be surveyed in order to find joint solutions for a liveable public space. Trees, greenery and water are to be implemented on the square as part of the project so that the Volkertviertel will be a little cooler in the coming summers. It is planned to build a BARTLETT as part of the project. This BARTLETT is a shading element with photovoltaics and water management. It illustrates the technical challenges posed by heat islands and the possible solutions.

The AIT functions as project management. GrünStattGrau, Landscape Architect Grimm, Architects Tillner & Willinger and WieNeu+ with the urban renewal area management (GB*, district management area Nordbahnhof/Nordwestbahnhof) are involved. The project is funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) as part of the ‘Lighthouses for resilient cities 2040’ funding programme and financed by the Climate and Energy Fund.
